Coming to a thea-- I mean TV screen near you
Mark Cuban's HDNet wants to bring the movie experience home, and theater owners are none too pleased about it. Cuban is one of several industry players trying to broadcast theatrical films on home screens at roughly the same time they hit movie theaters. It's unknown whether this strategy will hurt the theaters cash registers, or if home audiences will pony up for these films, which are often indie features, not "Spider-Man XXI."
The latest Cuban salvo comes with "Redacted," Brian De Palma's new anti-war film. Check out TV Predictions for the skinny.
And, for anyone who loves HDTV or wants to keep posted on the latest news involving the technology, there's no better site out there than tvpredictions.com.

Given the anecdotal evidence that ever-higher ticket prices + ever-poorer film quality (c.f Writers' Strike post) + ever-decreasing cinema etiquette have combined to keep adult audiences out of the multiplexes, I applaud the concept behind this action. Whether it is too far ahead of its time remains to be seen....
I really hope independent films can benefit from this practice. That way, a two-tier system can serve audiences. Theater owners will still have the blockbusters to draw the crowds in, while those who want a smaller, more cerebral experience can get the films they want in the comfort of their homes.
