'King' of documentaries
I never wanted to see a Donkey Kong Kill Screen as badly as I did while watching the documentary "The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters."
OK, I had never heard of this kill screen before seeing the film, but it says volumes that I suddenly cared about a silly tech glich in an '80s video game.
"Kong" follows a family man named Steve trying to shatter the world's record on Donkey Kong, one of the biggest video games of the Atari era. He's up against the best -- Billy Mitchell, the hirsute hero of the gamer set. Mitchell has a swagger Steve lacks, but Steve has skills that may not be denied.
"Kong" brilliantly captures the curious sub-group of retro gamers, while showing that egos surrounding major league sports often filters down to lesser games.
It may not be the best documentary of the year, but it's hands down the most fun.
The doc comes out on DVD at the end of January, but if it's still playing at an indie house near you, drop your PlayStation and see it.

Okay, Toto, I'll see it on DVD (but only because you used the alliterative "hirsute hero")
As a Hirsute-American, I try to bring attention to my fellow HA's.
