Mob rules
Italian-American groups can breathe a sigh of relief. Hollywood appears to be moving on from depicting members of their community as mobsters. Now that "The Sopranos" is over, the latest trend is Russian or black mob characters. I check out the trend in today's Washington Times.
If "American Gangster" does as well as experts are predicting this weekend (it's tracking huge), then we'll certainly see more films featuring gangsters who look nothing like Tony Soprano. Creatively, it's a good thing. But I wonder if groups representing black or Russian interests will start to complain if too many like-minded films flood theaters.

Okay, Toto, you owe me $3.99 ... Upon your recommendation, I ordered "28 Weeks Later" pay-per-view last night ... Sweet jeebus, it was unwatchable, reminded me of '80s crapfest "Defcon 4" ...
And I LIKED the original 28 Days Later ...
Now, now, no one's perfect, and I gave it a very qualified recommendation. Some critics loved it, too ... that said, I'll give you $3.99 in used Yankees merchandise. Fair?
Back on topic...while I would not rule out Black backlash on Black gangster films (I doubt the Russian-American community is powerfully vocal enough, else they would have picketed Dick Wolf about three to four seasons ago), using the similar model of the rise of "boyz in the hood" - type films in the 90s, it is likely that Black gangster films similarly will be welcomed, if only to see more leading roles.
