Where have you gone, Savage Steve?

I lived it up this past weekend, catching a midnight movie without once falling sleep. OK, my eyelids drooped now and then, but in my defense I've seen "Better Off Dead" so many times I could recite the screenplay if the audio track dropped off. The 1985 comedy starring a baby-faced John Cusack endures thanks to a smart script and some pinpoint editing. And, of course, there's Ricky (Dan Schneider), the oversized Romeo trying to woo the French exchange student.
Ah, teen bliss.
But whatever happened to its creator, "Savage" Steve Holland? He followed "Dead" with "One Crazy Summer," a lesser comic vehicle but one which let Bobcat Goldthwait crush a miniature town in a Godzilla suit. That counts for something, right?
He later shot "How I Got into College" before transitioning to mostly kiddie TV shows.
He was no John Hughes, but he deserves to be an asterisk, at the least, in the compendium of '80s teen comedies.
The movie site imdb.com has him directing a new film to be released next year as well as writing Howard Stern's remake of "Porky's."
I hope his film career enjoys a quirky second act.
