Dog gone good

This reformed art student once had a teacher who suggested I insert a dog into all my illustrations. I exaggerate, but only slightly.
In her honor, I give you my favorite movie canines, in no particular order. (Let's set aside Lassie, Beethoven and Rin Tin Tin. Too obvious.)
* The Bumpus Hounds: "A Christmas Story" wouldn't be the same without the disrespectful dawgs who nearly wrecked the holidays for Ralphie and co.
* Sam: "I Am Legend's" German Shepherd is the ultimate companion for Will "last man standing" Smith. She licks his face constantly, stays mostly by his side and isn't afraid of a little zombie.
* Hooch: "Turner & Hooch" is a lousy movie, but what a dog! So cute you could put up with the fountain of slobber.
* Toto: If you have to ask why ...
I'm sure I'm forgetting some great cinematic dogs. Refresh my memory, please. (Photo: Will Smith and Sam share a quiet moment in "I Am Legend")

A "B" movie from my youth, the apocalyptic "A Boy and His Dog" had a pretty cool dog. Astro from the Jetsons (or "space Scooby", but without a clue). I'm sure I'm not the only manly-man who cried at Old Yeller (Hey, if Bill Murray'll cop to it, why can't I?). Michael J. Fox's "Max" in those old dog, young dog and prissy cat movies was pretty cool. Fred McMurray as the Shaggy D.A. (didn't see the re-make). Can I get a witness?

Ah, "A Boy and his Dog" also came to mind, nice call, Superdave ... And then I come to Steve Martin's masterpiece, "The Jerk" .... "You should not call that dog 'Hero,' you should call him, 'Shithead'"

Let's not forget:

Spuds MacKenzie
Walt's dog on "Lost"
Eddie, the dog on "Frazier"
Sandy, from Little Orphan Annie
Meatball, from Baa Baa Black Sheep
Einstein, Back to the Future
Tiger, from the Brady Bunch (one season, then ... gone, weird)
Buck, Call of the Wild
Ernest, (Dave Barry's real dog, also in the show, Dave's World)
Yellow Dog, Funny Farm
Old Yeller,
Dinky and Snots, Vacation
and Benji
and, I'm tired, goin to bed...

Good night, John Boy.
