'Once' and for all

OK, I'm not gonna say another peep after today about "Once" - although if the film doesn't get a Best Original Song nomination I might grab some spitballs and seek out the nearest watch tower.

The Irish indie "Once" comes out on DVD this week - tomorrow, to be precise. It's a musical where the songs flow naturally out of characters and situations. People don't stop what they're doing and break into song like many a musical.
The budget wouldn't cover Julia Roberts' trailer, and the two lead characters don't even have names.
Have I lost you yet?
Good, because I'm not the only one smitten with "Once." It's got a 98 percent rating over at Rottentomatoes.com.
Boy busker (Glen Hansard) meets cute Czech girl (Marketa Irglova) and a romantic flame sparks. He wants to start a recording career. She has her hands full taking care of her child and has no room for a new man in her life. But their music, and mutual attraction, makes them re-evaluate their positions.
Give it a try. (Photo: Fellow musicians Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova) are lost in thought during "Once.")
