'Sun' stars
Raise your hands if you thought Joseph Gordon-Levitt would be the breakout star from "Third Rock from the Sun." I was sure it was the guy who never opened his eyes for the show's entire run.
But Gordon-Levitt is building an impressive film resume, one so under the radar it could rank as a stealth weapon.
His drama "The Lookout" provides a superb case in point. He plays Chris Pratt, a cocky hockey star in his small town who kills two people and severely injures himself while doing some hot dog car tricks. Months later, he's a shell of himself. He can't keep his hands steady and must put labels all over his house lest he forget which drawer has the knives and forks in it. His social skills were left back on the roadway where the fatal crash happened. He's easy prey for a local hood (Matthew Goode, an actor who caught my attention three years ago in the otherwise tame "Chasing Liberty") who recruits Chris for a bank heist. "The Lookout" earned some deliriously strong reviews upon its release, and while it's not as transcendent as those critics said, it's still a terrific movie and a fine showcase for Gordon-Levitt. Not bad for a former sitcom star.
