'80s Rewind: 'Full Moon in Blue Water'

Teri Garr and Gene Hackman co-owned the '80s.
Garr's grounded beauty adorned several blockbusters ("Mr. Mom," "Tootsie"), and she made her flirtatious Letterman appearances appointment TV. Hackman either starred in every movie of that decade (20 in all), or was digitally inserted into them, I still can't tell which.
They joined forces in 1988's "Full Moon in Blue Water," a sleeper's sleeper in which Hackman plays a sad-sack bar owner pining for his ex-wife. Garr plays his hard-working underling, a women who loves him but won't put up with his woe-is-me act for much longer. What follows is a series of improbable comic sequences, but much in the way "Seems Like Old Times" won me over on the chemistry between its leads, "Full Moon" does the same with its Hackman-Garr elixir.
In 2002, Garr opened up regarding her battle with Multiple Sclerosis, but she continues to work on the big and small screen. Hackman appears to be retired, although I hope he'll reconsider.

"Grounded beauty" Are you writing copy for IMDB now?

While it is easier to find a worshipper of Thor than to find an ugly actress, Garr at her best - circa "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" - was attractive, in a your-friend's-non-MILF-mother sort of way.

Hackman was the Samuel L. Jackson of the 80s - I think it actually was referenced at one of those interminably egoistical award shows - but unlike his British peer, Michael Caine, he did not do *anything,* so I imagine that Popeye Doyle's performance is quite good here, although the idea of Hackman as an effective comedic actor is about as believable as Lange as an effective comedic actor in "Tootsie."
Still, I'll add the DVD to my Queue.

Hackman proved his comic chops in "Welcome to Mooseport," a borderline horrible movie that Hackman still managed to shine in. Remarkable. That "Mooseport" could be his last major film role is a debacle.
And I was going to use your "in a your-friend's-non-MILF-mother sort of way" line -- but "grounded beauty" was easier to type.
