'80s Rewind: 'Seems Like Old Times'

Chevy Chase and Goldie Hawn only made two films together, but boy, did these two click on-screen.

1980's "Seems Like Old Times" isn't a classic. It's the decade's version of comfort food, but it's so well handled by its leads, operating with a Neil Simon script, that it begs inclusion here.
Nick (Chase) still carries a torch for his ex-wife, Glenda (Goldie Hawn). But she's happily married to Ira (Charles Grodin), a district attorney whose political star is on the rise.
When Nick gets accused of a bank robbery (long story), he reaches out to the softest touch he knows - dog-loving, petty criminal-supporting Glenda.
What follows is a genre that usually leaves me cold - bedroom farce, or screwball comedy, take your pick - but it's handled with considerable grace. And it's a blast to recall a time when Chase delivered a droll punch line like no other. His unassailable confidence sells every gag in "Seems Like Old Times."

Ah, the Eighties. A whole decade of guilty pleasures. But pleasures they are. If only Chevy had remained arrogant, we'd all still love him.

Too bad he wasn't only arrogant on screen, to believe the reports about his off-screen behavior ...

His off-screen behavior, at least in the early 90s when I saw him, echoed the unpleasant reputation he apparently began garnering at the beginning of his Halcyon Days with the First Generation of Not Ready for Prime Time Players. However, there were classic 80s vehicles that suited him, and his smarmy charisma, well - so long as his female lead did not threaten him. Hawn did not - indeed, she actually was a friend - and the absence of tension allowed the warm chemistry that the two display on screen.
