Oscar, Oscar

Missed the show last night? Catch the bullet points here.
My take? Too long, but what else is new. Jon Stewart improved on his last performance. Mostly free of political grandstanding. Few surprises save Marion Cotillard's Best Actress victory. Too many film clip montages. And too many B- and C-list stars at the presenter's podium. The Rock? Jessica Alba?? Miley Cyrus???

LEAVE DWAYNE ALOOONE!!!

LOL

(mis-)Label me elitists, but my historic criticisms of the Academy Awards presentation and concept as a whole notwithstanding, I do tune in with the expectation of viewing Hollywood's luminaries, not its energy-saving bulbs. Alba I may grant a mulligan, as many of the major gossip periodicals lobby on her behalf as a telegenic starlet, but I agree that there were FAR too many television-level celebrities with FAR too much screen time and faux importance. (Unless...this is yet another sign of the diminution of the American star system.)

The occasional Alba is fine ... but what about Michael Caine? Gene Hackman? Morgan Freeman? Meryl Streep? Jodie Foster? They all had other plans?

(con't)...
Perhaps the near-eleventh-hour writers' strike reprieve was too late for A-listers to change their plans? (That would be my Publicist's story, regardless.)
Otherwise, perhaps the Streeps, Freemans, Fosters, et al. now DO have other (better) plans - I would imagine for most of them at this point in their respective celebrated careers, (Jack being an exception; what will the Oscars be w/o him?), there actually are more important things in life these days....

Didn't notice it til after the fact, but all four of the big actor-award winners are non-Americans. Interesting.
