The real McAvoy

Movie stars aren't a dime a dozen, even if dozens of actors work 'round the clock in Hollywood. Kevin Kline? Movie star. Keanu Reeves? Not quite. Jodie Foster? Yup. Add James McAvoy to this exclusive club.
McAvoy is the real deal, a versatile performer whose expressive face makes him fascinating to watch even in thinly realized roles, like the one he has in the new film "Penelope."
He first caught my attention in the flawed but fascinating "The Last King of Scotland," and he was just as terrific in the overrated "Atonement." But watching "Penelope," which opens tomorrow, confirmed my early assessments. He's a bona fide star.

You mean, "actor," right? A thespian with notable talent.

"Stars" just are the Julia Roberts and Tom Cruises, et al.: photogenic and charismatic, and even watchable, usually - but not necessarily all that talented.

I think of movie star as someone who transcends his her or age, a person who can make the worst movies tolerable, someone who's so expressive and engaging that it's a treat to watch them.

I think there are two separate categories -- actor and movie star. Either is worth watching. But those few who are at the top of the list in both categories -- like Denzel Washington -- that's what makes for movie magic.
