'Drillbit' beaten to the punch
If "Drillbit Taylor" feels familiar, it's because its nebbishy leads are a carbon copy from last year's "Superbad." The comparison doesn't flatter "Drillbit," a lesser comic vehicle from the Judd Apatow assembly line - he produced, but did not write the new comedy.
My Washington Times review still shares some love for the movie, a lot more affection than most critics are doling out for the film.
Hard to go wrong with Owen Wilson is full slacker mode, and some of that "Superbad"-style bonding makes "Drillbit Taylor" a notch above the usual teen fare.

The bible (imdb) tells us Mr. Frost is due out in two new films, one a comedy about a college kid trying to play pro baseball ... eh.
And another called "The Vicious Kind" about a guy who falls for his brother's girlfriend ... hmm. Frost co stars with Tampa's Brittany Snow (American Dreams) and J.K. Simmons (Oz, Law and Order, the Closer) ... he's awesome.
Should be interesting to see what happens ... It's like when I saw Skeet Ulrich in that TNT epic about the West, I thought, "hey, this guy's going to be a star" ... Let's see what Skeet pulls off after Jericho.
Sometimes the media picks a new star out of the sky ... and I can't figure out why. (thought that was the case with Heath Ledger, but time proved me wrong). Just figured I'd do some star searchin' on my own. And having grown up watching a young John Cusack in such classics as "Better Off Dead," the dead ringer-ness of Frost struck me.
It was interesting to see Frost twice in the same week -- I also saw him in "Stop-Loss" alongside some of my favorite young actors and I agree that he has the potential to be a breakout star.
Nell, glad you confirmed my radar. Will be curious to see what Frost does next ...
