To Blu or not to Blu?

The format war is history, but the future for your home entertainment system may still look fuzzy. Mind does. I can't decide whether I want to invest in a Blu-ray player. I've got tons of traditional DVDs in my collection -- do I really wanna re-buy the best of the best in the Blu-ray format? And am I gonna plunk down $400 tomorrow for a player when I know the price won't remain the same for long?

Let's let the HDTV guru, Phillip Swann, sharpen the debate. Check out his new "pros & cons" article over at TVPredictions.com. It should help you make your own mind up regarding the format.

I already have HD on-demand movies available streaming into my house via cable ... I think you wait 2 years, and you'll be downloading those flicks in HD anytime, anywhere via Blockbuster.com or Netflix.com or iTunes ... and showing them on your regular TV ...

I'd say skip the bluray ... technology has a shorter and shorter life, and this "disc" ship has sailed ... as for portable "point of sales" availability for content, we're not far from buying your favorite media on a flash drive. The disc is doomed.

I tend to agree ... 10 years ago Blu-ray would have reigned supreme. Not today. Will be curious to see how the Blu-ray story unfolds.

But ... if the price falls far enough, I'll still consider it simply to have a new, souped up DVD player.
