Apatow bounces back

Judd Apatow may be stretching himself too thin these days, but he's still capable of delivering a comedy fastball now and then.

His new R-rated comedy "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" finds the prolific comedy producer back on familiar turf - raucously funny comedies meant for adults.

My Washington Times review recaps the hilarity, but for space reasons I neglected to highlight a terrific bit part delivered by "30 Rock's" Jack McBrayer. He plays an uptight newlywed nervous about pleasing his sexually aggressive bride. The storyline caps with a bawdy sight gag that's as deftly played as every other element in "Marshall."

Go. Enjoy. And remember never to be naked if you're girlfriend is even thinking about breaking up with you. After the movie you'll know why.

I'm a bit fed up with the Apatow formula of a shlubby boy-man who longs to be with a woman but has no idea of how to talk to one, written by screenwriters who like to create characters for beautiful actresses but have no idea how to write for them. But this movie had some very funny moments, especially those involving Russell Brand as the self-absorbed rock star. The scene with the shirt was a highlight.

I think "40 Yr Old V" and "Knocked Up" did a solid job creating compelling female characters. But "Forgetting" utterly fails on that count.

I don't mind the 'shlubby guy who grows up formula,' at least if it's accompanied by genuinely funny material.

And Brand is terrific in "Forgetting."
