Best 'SNL' Alums - Bill Murray

Comic actors are supposed to follow a specific arc - rising star, superstar, fading star ... and then bit player on some lame sitcom.

Bill Murray played it differently from the start. He used his "SNL" fame to star in not just the blockbusters ("Ghostbusters") but also smaller, meatier movies ("The Razor's Edge"). He didn't mind appearing in smaller roles or even the occasional cameo ("Tootsie," "Little Shop of Horrors") so long as they broadened his appeal along with his range.

Today, he works infrequently, but it's almost an event to see where he'll end up. And with "Lost in Translation," he proved he could still carry a movie and convincingly romance a much younger woman.

He's had his share of missteps. "Scrooged" turned out to be intermittently charming but overblown by a mile, and "Groundhog's Day" simply isn't as good as everyone tells you it is. But he remains one of our most enigmatic talents and the cream of the 'SNL' crop.

Okay, you're out of your skull if you don't appreciate Groundhog Day, a true classic full of memorable lines ... "Phil? Phil Connors??!" .... "It's all one big crapshoot anyhoo!" ... "Too early for flapjacks?" ... "don't drive angry" ... "Did you want to talk about the weather, or were you just making conversation?" ... "Winter, slumbering in the open air, wears on its smiling face a dream... of spring. Ciao."

And you didn't spank him for the real stinker, "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou" ... oy, vey.

yep, it's an ad, I have the explanation on my blog, but it's a remake of a classic movie, I'll be interested to hear your thoughts.

The lines you quote don't impress me, I'm afraid, but I will rewatch "Groundhog" soon.

But yes, I should have mentioned the stink bomb that was "Zissou."

I adore bill Murray's performances. It took me a long time to see Groundhog Day, but when I did, I thought it was brilliant. My favorite Murray roles were in Ghostbusters and What About Bob. Hope he has a few more good films in him......
