Best 'SNL' alums - Christopher Guest

Going out on a limb with this pick, but hear me out.

Christopher Guest deserves a hallowed place in comedy just for starring in "This is Spinal Tap." But Guest used his one season on "Saturday Night Live" as a springboard to create a movie genre all its own - the improv comedy.

Name a great, or even good, feature length improv comedy not touched by Guest. I can't. The recent poker comedy "The Grand" illustrated just how hard the format can be to pull off. But Guest nails it time and again, what with "Best in Show," "For Your Consideration," "Waiting for Guffman" and, to a lesser extent, "A Mighty Wind."

Plus, Guest directed the minor classic "The Big Picture," proved a delectable villain in "The Princess Bride" and continues to break us up as Spinal Tap's Nigel Tufnel in various TV and stage appearances.

For hitting so many hard-to-reach high notes, Guest deserves inclusion here.

Guest is one of my favorites. I had the privilege of meeting him a few years ago. I was his driver at our local film festival for 2 days. He is smart, polite, kind, punctual. His sense of humor is subtle. He had me laughing so hard in a store, over one small observation, that I had to walk out, and he stood there with a "what? me?" look on his face. And what a talented musician! Thumbs up for this choice on your list.

Great story, Linda. I'm jealous. Glad to see he's a regular Joe ... and as dryly funny as I'd wish him to be.
