Top 5 Worst Sequels: 'Son of the Mask'

Hard to imagine a worse idea -- trying to make "The Mask" into a comic franchise or thinking Jamie Kennedy can stand in for Jim Carrey.

That tortured math gave us 2005's "Son of the Mask," an awful movie by any definition but an even worse example of Hollywood's imagination drain. Did anyone think "The Mask" deserved a sequel - and could such a sequel stand a chance without the presence of Carrey or Cameron Diaz?

Kennedy can be a plus on screen - his "Malibu's Most Wanted" made me chuckle and he's a solid cog in the "Scream" machine. But to say he's no Jim Carrey is an understatement of biblical proportions.

Note: I've chosen my top five worst sequels here, but I've left out a bevy of stinkers. My selections were based on a variety of reasons - from desperation to disappointment. No one expected "Jaws IV: The Revenge" to be any good, so I kept it off my top 5 list. But for the record, let's give a raspberry salute to: "Beverly Hills Cop III," "Caddyshack 2," "Basic Instinct 2" and "Superman IV."

In the words of Bill Lumbergh, "ahhhhm gonna have to go ahead and 'disagree' with you on that one' ....

Can't say I bothered with Pirates II or III, so you may have something, but to leave Caddyshack II off the worst ever (no, not even an honorable mention) will do it ... as well as The Sting II??? Come On ....

What grates my cheese is the inclusion of Back to the Future III ... okay, high art? no, but when it drifts in front of me on a hung over Sunday afternoon when there's no football on, heck, I stick with it .... I can't say Michael J. Fox ever turned in a bad performance, even in that stinkeroo Bright Lights Big City ... (or was it Less Than Zero?) ...

I also can't believe Rocky V was off the list. You can't argue "nobody expected it to be good" because actually, Rocky IV was pretty entertaining (Rocky in Russia against Ivan Drago ... I must break you) and the final Rocky VI (Rocky Balboa) got lots of critical love ...

And for that matter, who in his right mind Expected The Son of Mask to be worth the admission to a dollar movie theater ... ???

(do those still exist? If not, where do underage teens go to drink in the middle of the afternoon nowadays?)

A feisty post! I really hated "Future III" and that's despite my hetero-love for Michael J. And I thought "Rocky Cinco" was tolerable. A character flaw in me? perhaps! And I included "Son of Mask" simply out of the audacity behind the project.

And I did mention "Caddy 2" in my role call of lousy movies.

Oh, indeed, I saw CaddyII in the "honorable mentions" my parenthises was misplaced ... what I was saying is that it was so wretched that it deserved to be in the top 5 ... anyway, you should be proud to note that NO ZOMBIE MOVIES made it into the top 5 ... Night of the Living Dead lives on! :-)
